Most commercial kitchen insurance policies include a condition (often called a warranty) about cleaning the extract system. BESA notes that TR19 Grease was produced in response to increasing requirements from insurers, property owners and regulators (BESA).
What to check in your policy
- Whether it names TR19 or "BESA" standards specifically.
- The cleaning frequency it requires – this can be stricter than the TR19 minimum.
- Whether the whole system (including ductwork, not just canopy and filters) must be cleaned.
- What evidence you must keep, such as a post-clean report or certificate.
Why it matters
BESA warns that using unqualified contractors can result in non-compliant cleaning and invalidated insurance cover (BESA). TR19 Grease itself says the building's insurer should be consulted to make sure the cleaning regime meets the terms of their specific warranty.
What to keep on file
Keep each post-clean report with before and after photos, deposit test results and the date of the next recommended clean. See what a TR19 certificate includes.
